One of our original and best routes in Central Mongolia has had a make-over, with some exciting remote off-road sections added. This trip is an opportunity to see the greatest variety of Mongolian scenery including an extinct volcano, granite mountains, deep river canyons, lakes, villages, sand dunes and open steppe. Cover a total of 1720 km during a thrilling 7-days of riding.
The route is 75% off-road in terms of time spent riding, and is challenging as it has been revised to avoid the new asphalt road where possible and go an alternative way on rough and remote tracks. Even the first day is 375 km off-road, requiring stamina and strength. All nights are spent at 'GER' Camps where the accommodation is in traditional Mongolian round white felt tents, and there are restaurant and bathroom facilities.
The places you will see along the way:
The lake was formed when torrents of lava from the Khorgo volcano blocked the north and south rivers, thus forming the dammed lake of "Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur" at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level.
This extinct volcano lies at an altitude of 2240 meters, east of the White Lake in a National Park. The volcanic crater is 200 meters wide and 100m deep; the northern slope is covered with Siberian larch.
This mysterious pinnacle of granite rises abruptly from the flat grassland of the gravel spreads of the Tamir River. There is no agreement amongst geologists on the origin of this puzzling phenomenon.

(Revised itinerary January 2025)
Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group. The pre-tour meeting is about the day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.
Set out early morning and ride south eastwards, initially on the main asphalt road to 'Zuun Mod' town, then off into the wilderness. Outside the city most people live the traditional nomadic lifestyle, moving several times a year with their herds of animals and we pass through only a couple of villages along the way. Arrive 'Elsen Tasarkhai' in the early evening. Overnight ger camp amid the sand dunes and desert vegetation.
Ride from "Elsen Tasarkhai" to "Kharkhorin" town, the original capital of Mongolia and spend an hour or two at 'Erdene Zuu' Buddhist monastery. We may see the resident monks performing their morning rituals. Ride on very rough tracks beside the Orkhon river, then up into the Khangai mountains to reach the Ger camp at 'Tsagaan Hot Springs'.
Ride on rough tracks over a couple of mountain passes and through remote forested fertile hills and valleys to arrive at the town of 'Tsetserleg'. After lunch continue on an improved road over Bulgan mountain and north to "Tariat" village. Ride through the National Park to reach the ger camp right beside the White Lake 'Ger Camp'.
Set off riding along the lake shore and stop to climb up to the rim of the extinct 'Khorgo Volcano' from where you can see the full extent of ancient volcanic activity, as well as peer down into the crater. Continue on to the viewpoint at 'Chuluut Gorge' then head off into the remote hills where the only inhabitants are nomadic families with their herds of yaks, sheep and goats. Arrive at the 'Taikhar Chuluu' ger camp in the late afternoon.
Depart from the Ger camp and ride eastwards, passing by an ancient 'Deer Stone', a fine example of Central Asian nomadic sculpture. Ride nearby the village of 'Gurvan Bulag' then continue along a remote trail through the sand belt of middle Mongolia. Finally, via this little-known route, arrive at the ger camp in the dramatic location of 'Khogno Khan'.
From "Khogno Khan" ride to the asphalt road, then along to Erdensant village before setting off on rough tracks again. The rolling hills are sparsely populated and you might be invited in to a 'Mongolian Family Ger'. In the late afternoon reach another area of semi-desert, 'Uvurburd Els' where you are likely to see camels and goats, rather than the yaks and sheep that were so common up in the mountains. Overnight ger camp.
Return to Ulaanbaatar, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Initially we ride across open steppe on the rough tracks we have become used to, then join the new 'surfaced' road to get back to the city. 'Overnight in hotel'.
Departure.
