Khorgo Volcano & White Lake Motorcycle Trail

1 - 9 SEPTEMBER 2019 (few places left) only USD $2995

This motorcycle tour through Mongolia's central provinces is partly off-road and offers the opportunity to see just what an amazing place this is. Ride round the shore of the White Lake, climb the Khorgo Volcano and ride through the town of Kharkhorin which was once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire. Motorbike touring in Mongolia is a great way to experience Central Asia, but you need some off-road experience.

Please note that nowadays there are a few competitor motorcycle companies offering the same or similar tours. Some have copied "Khorgo Volcano & White Lake Motorcycle Trail" and website content, given it a new name and advertised it as their own tour, at a cheaper price, perhaps without having tried and tested the route.

White Lake, Mongolia
White Lake Highlights

The lake was formed when torrents of lava from the Khorgo volcano blocked the north and south rivers, thus forming the dammed lake of "Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur" at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level.

This extinct volcano lies at an altitude of 2240 meters, east of the White Lake in a National Park. The volcanic crater is 200 meters wide and 100m deep; the northern slope is covered with siberian larch.

Taikhir Chuluu Highlights

This mysterious pinnacle of granite rises abruptly from the flat grassland of the gravel spreads of the Tamir River. There is no agreement amongst geologists on the origin of this puzzling phenomenon.

Kharkhorin in Central Mongolia was the capital of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century during the days of Genghis Khan. Several centuries later a large Buddhist monastery was founded here.

Riding Terrain and Facilities on this Trip

This 1750 km route will be a challenge, as we have revised it to avoid the new black-topped road and go an alternative way on rough and remote tracks. Even the first day is 400km off-road, requiring stamina and strength. All nights are spent at GER camps where the accommodation is in traditional Mongolian round white felt tents, and there are restaurant and bathroom facilities.

Khorgo Volcano & White Lake Motorcycle Tour Map

Mongolia is a great place for a motorcycle tour, but it is only suitable for confident riders with off-road experience. The routes are too remote and the terrain too rough for beginners. Sometimes we will stay in traditional ger camps, but in parts of the country there are no facilities for tourists so we camp in the wilderness.

  • DAY 1

Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Evening meet the tour leader and rest of group for Technical Briefing. The meeting talks about day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.

  • DAY 2

Set out early morning and ride south eastwards, initially on the main asphalt road to 'Zuun Mod' town, then off into the wilderness. Outside the city most people live the traditional nomadic lifestyle, moving several times a year with their herds of animals and we pass through only a couple of villages along the way. Arrive 'Khogno Khan' in the late evening. Overnight at the foot of the dramatic granite mountain.

  • DAY 3

Ride Khogno Khan to Kharkhorin and spend an hour or two at 'Erdene Zuu'. This is an active monastery and we will probably see the resident monks performing their morning rituals. Ride through the district of Tuvshuruulekh and Tsenkher to arrive at Tsetserleg town for a late lunch. Cross over Bulgan mountain pass to the ger camp beside the Tamir river and the sacred 'Taikhir Chuluu'. Overnight ger camp.

  • DAY 4

Riding mainly on rough jeep tracks, we travel across the fertile rolling hills of Arkhangi province, passing through the village of 'Chuluut'. Ride on to Tariat village and over the bridge into the Khorgo and White Lake National Park. Go around the extinct volcano and over a small pass to the ger camp on the shores of the 'White Lake'.

  • DAY 5

Follow the rocky trail that runs along the northern shore of the and a little further to the salt water 'Country Lake' nearby which are several ancient 'Stone Sculptures'. There are usually a number of nomadic families here and you will see how they live in this harsh environment. Return to the 'Ger Camp' and afternoon relax by the lake.

  • DAY 6

Start the day by visiting the Cave of the Yellow Dog and climbing to the top of the 'Khorgo Volcano'. Walk around the rim of the crater for fantastic views of the whole area including the lake and surrounding black lava field. Then ride back to Ikh Tamir on tarmac road, stopping on the way at 'Chuluut River Gorge'. Overnight Ikh Tamir ger camp.

  • DAY 7

From Ikh Tamir ride along the valley following the Tamir river eastwards to Ugii Nuur lake. This is an area of some historical significance since the princes of Mongolia’s Turkic era (7th century) were based here and even now there are a number of ancient monuments including 'Deer Stones' to be seen. Cross the Tamir river on a 'Raft' and arrive early afternoon for lunch. Overnight ger camp near the lake.

  • DAY 8

Return to Ulaanbaatar, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. The first 20 km are across open steppe on the rough tracks we have become used to. After Dashinchilen the road has been 'surfaced', so the final stretch to the city should be a bit quicker. Overnight hotel.

Comparing Different tour companies ?

If you are comparing different tour companies and trying to decide which is the best, you must ask the following questions: Who owns and maintains the motorbikes ? Will everyone ride the same model of bike ? Will an experienced mechanic travel with the group ? What kind of spare parts and equipment do they have ? Have they done the route before as a motorcycle tour ? What kind of support vehicles will go with the group ? When you have asked all these questions, you will be in a good position to compare the prices of different companies.
