Throughout history, the nomadic people of Mongolia have moved with their herds to find better conditions, or to trade for basic necessities. Ulaanbaatar was the central trading point on the route from Russia to China, where furs were exchanged for silk and tea. Travel from east to west by merchants and tradesmen was encouraged during the Mongol Empire because the local nomadic people needed to trade for weapons, pots and cloth which they did not make themselves. This motorcycle trail encompasses some of those ancient routes, and the Buddhist monasteries along the way which were the only permanent settlements.
Mongolia’s wild open spaces completely lend themselves to the challenge of off-road motorcycle riding. The terrain on this Nomad’s Trail routes are 70% off-road includes rough jeep tracks, hard-pack, loose gravel, rock, mud and river crossings. Experience is required because the route is remote and far from good medical facilities. Accommodation is at traditional 'GER' camps with decent facilities, located in the most beautiful places.
The places you will see along the way:
In the north of Mongolia, between three of the largest mountain ranges, lies the junction of five major rivers: Delgermurun, Bugsei, Ider, Chuluut and Selenge Murun. The beauty and remoteness of this place are remarkable and one night spent in a luxury ger camp under the stars will be one of the highlights of the trip.
These days about a quarter of the population are still nomadic, living in traditional gers (yurts) and moving frequently with their herds of animals. See how people work with their livestock, their horse-riding skills, musical culture and religious practices and traditions. Visitors traveling and enjoying their country are always made welcome.
“Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur” in the Khangai mountains of Central Mongolia lies at an altitude of 2060 meters. It was created many millennia ago when torrents of lava from the nearby Khorgo volcano blocked the north and south Terkh rivers forming a damned lake. The water is crystal clear and home to many species of fish and birds.

This itinerary is suitable for experienced riders with some off-road experience
Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group for pre-tour meeting. The meeting will talk about the day by day itinerary and safety protocol. Overnight in hotel.
The motorbikes are allocated and we set off. Start riding south-west across the rolling hills of Tuv "Central" province. We pass through only a couple of villages and most families are living the nomadic lifestyle. Overnight wild camping near in 'Buren'.
Ride to Kharkhorin, the original capital of Mongolia and visit 'Erdene Zuu' monastery. This was the first and most important Buddhist monastery in the country, founded in the 16th century. Afternoon continue westwards and overnight wild camping near 'Tuvshruulekh'.
Ride through Tsetserleg town, then through remote valleys along the 'Chuluut' river gorge. Enter the national park and ride past Khorgo volcano to reach the ger camp right beside Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, the "White Lake".
Ride northwards through lovely and varied scenery, over 'Tarvagtain Pass' and on to Jargalant village, famous for being the birthplace of "Undur Gongor", the tallest man in Mongolia; he lived in the early 20th century and stood at 2.36 meters tall. Overnight camp beside "Zurkh Lake".
We are now in the province known as Khovsgol, a beautiful mountainous region that borders Siberia and has several major rivers which flow north into Lake Baikal. Near the point where 'Five Rivers' meet is a ger camp and here is where we spend the evening, surrounded by spectacular scenery.
Continuing clockwise “with the sun”, we travel southwards, initially on tarmac road, to the region of 'Sharga Lake' Bulgan Province and spend the night wild camping in remote mountains of Arkhangai Province in near Khanui River, far from any of the regular tourist trails. Overnight camping near "Khanui River".
Ride south to the large freshwater 'Ugii Lake' located in the hills of Arkhangai province. The lake is home to many species of fish and water birds, and is very pleasant for swimming in. Overnight 'Ger' camp near the lake.
Return to Ulaanbaatar, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. The first 25km are across open steppe on the rough tracks we have become used to. After "Dashinchilen" the road (Millenium Road) has been 'surfaced', so the final stretch to the city should be a bit quicker. 'Overnight in hotel'.
Departure.
