Khorgo Volcano & White Lake Motorcycle Trail

4 - 12 AUGUST 2017 only USD $2795 (Revised Route)

This motorcycle tour through Mongolia's central provinces is partly off-road and offers the opportunity to see just what an amazing place this is. Ride round the shore of the Great White Lake, climb the Khorgo Volcano and ride through the town of Kharkhorin which was once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire. Motorbike touring in Mongolia is a great way to experience Central Asia, but you need some off-road experience.

White Lake, Mongolia
White Lake Highlights

The lake was formed when torrents of lava from the Khorgo volcano blocked the north and south rivers, thus forming the dammed lake of "Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur" at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level.

Khorgo Volcano, Mongolia
Khorgo Volcano Highlights

This extinct volcano lies at an altitude of 2240 meters, east of the White Lake in a National Park. The volcanic crater is 200 meters wide and 100m deep; the northern slope is covered with siberian larch.

Taikhir Chuluu, Mongolia
Taikhir Chuluu Highlights

This mysterious pinnacle of granite rises abruptly from the flat grassland of the gravel spreads of the Tamir River. There is no agreement amongst geologists on the origin of this puzzling phenomenon.

Kharkhorin, Mongolia
Kharkhorin Highlights

Kharkhorin in Central Mongolia was the capital of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century during the days of Genghis Khan. Several centuries later a large Buddhist monastery was founded here.

This '1700km' route will be a challenge, although the road between Ulaanbaatar and Kharkhorin has now been black-topped. All nights are spent at ger camps where the accommodation is in traditional Mongolian round white felt tents, and there are restaurant and bathroom facilities. staying in places of exceptional beauty or importance.

Mongolia is a great place for a motorcycle tour, but it is only suitable for confident riders with off-road experience. The routes are too remote and the terrain too rough for beginners. Sometimes we will stay in traditional ger camps, but in parts of the country there are no facilities for tourists so we camp in the wilderness.
